SA Olympic and Paralympic class of 2012: our nation’s gold

Winston Rabotapi, Shadow Minister of Sport and Recreation
12 July 2012

The DA congratulates and sends our best wishes to all Olympians and Paralympians on their journey to the pinnacle of sporting excellence.

South Africans understand how sport can bring people together. We cherish those moments when the trials and triumphs of our sportswomen and men have served to unite and reconcile our nation in the quest for national pride. We cherish those moments when the heights of victory or the calamity of the contest are commonly shared.

Sport can be a powerful tool to promote nation building. The nurturing of talented athletes, regardless of their racial or cultural background, and the development of shared goals in multi-racial sports teams help build bridges.

We know that our athletes and their dedicated support staff will do themselves and all South Africans proud at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

It is said that spectacular achievements are always preceded by less spectacular and often unrecognised preparation. We acknowledge the sacrifices and dedication of our athletes and the sacrifices of their family, friends and supporters over this life-long journey.

We wish them every success for the duration of the games. We call on all South Africans to unite behind Team SA. We will be bleeding green and gold while undoubtedly witnessing many proudly South African moments.
