DA encourages all South Africans to vote

James Selfe, Chairperson of DA Federal Executive
19 April 2009

The Democratic Alliance (DA) encourages all registered South African voters to go out and vote on Election Day - Wednesday, 22nd April.

In particular, we would like to remind South Africans who may be away from their usual voting station on Election Day that this does not prevent them from voting in the elections. Those voters who are outside of their home provinces on Election Day can still vote on the national ballot at any polling station; those voters who remain within the province in which they are registered, but cannot get to their usual voting station, can still vote both on the national and provincial ballots.

The DA also urges South African employers to recognise that next Wednesday, voting day, is a public holiday. As such, if any employees are working on this day, we urge employers to give such employees time off so as to enable them to vote in safety and comfort.

If all DA voters get out to vote we can prevent Jacob Zuma from getting the two-thirds majority he needs to change the Constitution. And we can win the Western Cape, and build coalition governments in provinces across South Africa, which will set an example of good governance, service delivery and accountable leadership.
