Helen Lamoela

Shadow Minister of Women, Youth, Children and People with Disabilities

Helen was born in the Eastern Cape, the fourth daughter and one of ten children of a well-known business couple in Humansdorp.

She obtained her teaching diploma from Zonnebloem College in Cape Town and also has various diplomas in business management and advanced bookkeeping.

Helen became an active member of the DP in 1992, and she served as an organiser between 1998 and 2000.

In 2000 she became a regional organiser for the DA and in 2003 she became the Acting Regional Director for the party in the Western Region. She also served as a councillor in the Breede River Municipality.

Helen also serves as vice chairperson on school governing body of Eureka Youth Centre in Rawsonville, and is actively involved in especially problems relating to social welfare.

She was elected to Parliament in 2004 where she served as a member of the National Council of Provinces until 2009. On her re-election to Parliament in 2009, she was appointed as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Social Development in the National Assembly and has been Shadow Minister for Women, Children and People with Disabilities since early 2012.
