Research and Communications Officer – Free State Provincial Legislature

FIXED TERM CONTRACT

The above position now exists within the Democratic Alliance. The DA is looking to recruit a self-motivated and goal driven individual for this position, reporting to the Chief Whip and provincial Leader.

The successful incumbent should meet the following requirements:


EDUCATION, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Relevant degree or diploma in social sciences, politics or communication;
  • Excellent writing and communication skills;
  • Computer Literacy essential;
  • Proficiency in more than one language.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A detailed and expert understanding of current affairs and the national political landscape as well as the ability to analyse and interpret political developments;
  • Firm grasp of South African political environment;
  • A great understanding of the legislature and its various mechanisms, including but not limited to written and oral parliamentary questions, motions of notice, committees and legislature rules and procedures;
  • An understanding of what kind of research would be appealing to political  communication on print, radio and television platforms;
  • A detailed and expert understanding of the Democratic Alliance’s national policy, as well as its policy where it governs in the Western Cape Province, municipalities and the City of Cape Town;
  • Excellent political judgement and the ability to work irregular hours and under extreme pressure

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Producing high standard direct marketing designs for party communication material such as flyers, posters etc.;
  • Identifying information and data that will assist in promoting key issues for the DA’s communication strategy;
  • Attending committee meetings and sittings of the legislature in order to present research in a way that DA members of the legislature can practically utilize;
  • Writing at an excellent standard and producing speeches, media statements, articles, policy and other forms of political communication;
  •  Successfully working with the Free State legislature caucus to achieve the party’s research and communication objectives.
  • Successfully liaising with and servicing party representatives in local municipalities on their communication needs, in consultation with other communications staff;
  • Compilation and maintenance of comprehensive distribution lists to the media for both general release and specialist topics;
  • In conjunction with the Provincial Director, to maintain comprehensive internal party contact details;
  • To maintain a comprehensive record of all the Party’s communication issued and covered;
  • To assist the Provincial Director in facilitating and coordinating any communication functions.

A Community Operations Manager must be able to establish and sustain political activity designed to create a permanent presence in the identified communities.
 

The ideal candidate must be able to:

  • Provide effective management to all structures within his/her relevant communities,
  • Work in a diverse political environment in order to achieve the party’s strategic objectives,
  • Mentor structures to drive a culture of excellent performance and accountability,
  • Manage, implement and maintain systems and operational business plans,
  • Manage Elections, By-Elections and all campaigns within his/her relevant communities.

KEY RESULT AREAS:

  • Working with the structures in the Province to identify political activities to publicise through the media;

media institutions.
