The Democratic Alliance (DA) supports the report adopted by the National Assembly recommending the establishment of an Ad Hoc committee to investigate the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
These are not ordinary allegations but an illustration of a rot that has taken hold of a police service meant to protect the public but now captured by incompetence, corruption, and internal power struggles.
The DA will not allow this committee to become a mere tick- box exercise. We are committed to driving serious, systemic reform of SAPS.
Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi’s allegations have revealed a serious failure within the leadership of SAPS, including political interference that is damaging public trust and compromising investigations into organised crime and political killings.
Among the most alarming claims are:
• The unlawful disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team by Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu.
• The removal of 121 case dockets under instruction from Deputy National Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya.
• The alleged moratorium imposed by Minister Mchunu on filling vacancies within the SAPS Crime Intelligence Unit.
• Alleged corrupt relationships between senior leaders within SAPS and the public.
These allegations speak to a culture of impunity and political meddling that demands urgent scrutiny.
The DA will not allow this committee to become a whitewash, and we will fight to ensure that those who have compromised SAPS for personal or political gain are held accountable. We will demand transparency, enforce accountability, and call for the immediate removal of those who abuse their positions to shield corruption.
South Africans need a police service they can trust. And we have a duty to give it to them.
The time for excuses is over. Reform is no longer optional it is urgent.
