The City of Cape Town is pleased to announce the appointment of Vusumzi Magwebu as the City Ombudsman. He brings a wealth of experience in the fields of public protection, accountability and compliance to his role. As a transparent and accountable administration, we are ready to support the new Ombudsman in any way possible to perform his duties fairly and objectively for the good of our residents.
Vusumzi Magwebu has taken up the role as the City’s Ombudsman and succeeds Mongezi Menye. Magwebu will serve as the City Ombudsman for a five year period.
His responsibility is to ensure that complaints received from members of the public against the City are resolved by his office in a manner that is fair, impartial, objective, transparent, accountable and in the spirit, purport and objectives of the South African Constitution.
Magwebu brings a wealth of experience to the City. Prior to joining the City, he held senior leadership roles as a Commissioner at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), Senior Investigator at the Office of the Public Protector, Manager of Fraud and Compliance at the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Prosecutor at the Department of Justice. He has vast experience in investigations and forensic practice. He has also been a member of Parliament.
‘The Office of the Ombudsman, which is a neutral office, represents a cornerstone of our democracy in general and of the City’s customer-centric approach. It investigates and facilitates any complaints lodged by our residents. We are pleased to have Vusumzi Magwebu join us as his skills and experience will benefit our residents and the organisation as a whole. We must be kept on our toes and be accountable to our residents and ratepayers and ensure that we keep delivering services in the best manner possible,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Finance and Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson.
Magwebu holds a Bachelor of Law, a Diploma in Forensic Investigations and a Diploma in Labour Law (with distinction). He is also an affiliate member of The Association of Certified Fraud Examiners (ACFE).
