The City’s Transport Directorate has installed temporary fences at various public transport interchanges (PTIs) across Cape Town as an additional safety measure to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.  The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase, recently visited the Bellville PTI to see how the speed fencing is assisting in managing one of the busiest and key PTIs in the city.

‘The speed fencing initiative provides a form of access control at the PTIs and allows us to screen commuters before they enter the facility. Thousands of residents depend on public transport to get to work or school every day. As such, the City is trying its very best to create awareness of COVID-19 symptoms among commuters and to create a safer public area for all,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Transport, Alderman Felicity Purchase.

To date, speed fencing has been installed at the PTIs in Nomzamo, Somerset West, Mfuleni, Nyanga Central, Nyanga Junction, Parow and Bellville. Plans are currently underway to install fences at various facilities around Cape Town.

‘The COVID-19 pandemic is still with us and I want to remind commuters to please keep on wearing face masks when in public, to continue washing and sanitising hands often, to practice social distancing, and to avoid commuting when they do not feel well. By working together, and taking responsibility for our health and safety, we can stop the spread of the virus,’ said Alderman Purchase.
