Dube, Meadowlands and Diepkloof hostels in Soweto to be rejuvenated

19 Nov 2019 in Where We Govern

On Tuesday, 19 November 2019. We launched the start of the Dube, Meadowlands and Diepkloof hostels remedial works project.

This R34 million project comes as a result of the Housing Department’s implementation of the remedial works programme, in conjunction with the Johannesburg Social Housing Company (Joshco), for the three hostels in Soweto.

The current living conditions at all three of the hostels are untenable and this programme is aimed at restoring dignity to these community members.

We would like to assure the beneficiaries within the community that resources have been set aside to ensure timely payments of all claims by the contractors of this project. There is also provision made for 30% of the project budget to be allocated to employing local SMME’s and local labour.

We also pleased to report that the organised community structures at the hostels have welcomed the planned refurbishments and have committed to work with the City to ensure that the project is successfully completed.

We remain hopeful that the progress made in the housing portfolio at the City of Johannesburg since the beginning of the current term will most certainly assist in addressing the ever-increasing demand for secure tenure.

As a caring and multi-party coalition government, we remain committed to the empowerment and upliftment of our forgotten communities.
