Mayor Dan Plato expressed his gratitude for the donation, which he says will greatly assist Capetonians to limit the spread of COVID-19.

As face masks have become one of the essential tools in the fight against the Coronavirus, the City of Cape Town has been distributing thousands of masks that have been donated by private businesses to old age homes, NGOs, front line staff and others in need.

‘Thank you very much for your generosity. Even if it was 50 masks, we appreciate it. This donation is a clear sign that business and private companies are helping to play their part in the fight against COVID-19. The masks are durable, washable and reusable and are a mechanism for people to fight against the virus. It is a commendable display of how companies are opening their hearts,’ said Mayor Plato.

‘Both the National Government and the Western Cape Provincial Government have called for the use of non-medical face-masks wherever possible. The Cape Union Mart Group has heeded this call and has sprung into action turning its high tech K-Way factory into a mask producing entity. Caring for others forms one of the cornerstones of our business. We recognise that there are many communities and essential front line staff in need of masks, and we were thrilled to assist with this cause’ said Philip Krawitz, Cape Union Mart Chairman.
