City reprioritises R12 million for humanitarian relief in Cape Town

The City of Cape Town has reprioritised R12 million for immediate humanitarian relief in Cape Town.

The City’s Councillors have pooled contributions from their ward allocation budgets to provide emergency food relief. This is part of our targeted humanitarian response led by the City’s Executive Mayor Alderman Dan Plato.

The R12 million is made up of ward allocation funding earmarked for small to medium scale community development initiatives. Subcouncils embarked on the reprioritisation process after considering expenditure that would be impeded by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The rise of the COVID-19 pandemic and proclamation of a national disaster has brought impoverished communities to the brink of a humanitarian catastrophe.

While local government may not have the core delivery mandate for social relief, the City is playing its part to assist vulnerable residents who are bearing the brunt of the nationwide lockdown.

The City of Cape Town is taking a whole of society approach to assist our most vulnerable residents during these difficult times.

The City, Councillors and other stakeholders will use this funding for targeted social relief in communities where food insecurity is high.

The City will continue to provide updates on social relief efforts.
