The City of Cape Town handed over 15 more homes to beneficiaries at the R134,3 million Harare Infill housing project in Khayelitsha. On Tuesday 30 August 2022, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Malusi Booi and senior officials in the Human Settlements Directorate celebrated with the latest beneficiaries as they received the keys to their homes.
On Tuesday, 30 August the City’s Human Settlements Directorate hosted a special handover ceremony at its R134,3 million Harare Infill housing project in Khayelitsha.
‘We celebrate with the latest beneficiaries of the Harare Infill housing project as we continue to provide opportunities to residents in this mega-project. We have been engaging with the community over recent months and we are committed to handing over many more homes in the coming weeks.
‘We are pleased with the progress being made and today we handed over an additional 15 homes to beneficiaries in Phase 2 of the project. Thus far, 195 homes have been handed in Phase 2. The Harare infill housing project will provide opportunities to 900 qualifying beneficiaries, which includes 417 opportunities in Phase 1 and 483 homes in Phase 2.
‘Phase 1 will be completed by the end of November 2022 and Phase 2 will be completed in April 2023, if all goes as planned.
‘Many opportunities have been lost in Khayelitsha due to unlawful occupation and cannot allow this to continue. Queue-jumping for housing opportunities is unacceptable and residents and communities are encouraged to support the City’s efforts to protect beneficiaries, community projects and services by alerting us to any attempts to occupy land.
‘We thank City staff and contractors, the community and all stakeholders for making this handover possible,’ said Councillor Booi.
Beneficiaries of all City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s Housing Allocation Policy and the City’s Housing Needs Register to ensure that housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation.
