Road construction well on track

The road construction project of the Department of Transport and Public Works and the West Coast District Municipality for the tarring of the road between Stompneusbaai and Vredenburg is well on track.
Certain excavations are being done with dynamite and the road will therefore be closed to traffic from 1 August 2022 to 9 December 2022. The alternative route for traffic is via Main Road 533 past the Laingville exit, and via the R399 through Vredenburg.
To date, approximately 7,4 km of the road has been fully tarred at an estimated cost of R130 million. Phases 3 and 4 of the project are currently under way and entail the construction of 4,6 km that will be completed by October 2022. The last phase of the project is the construction of approximately 6 km that will be completed by March 2023.
According to the spokesperson of the West Coast District Municipality, Heinrich Robertson, the road construction project is well on schedule. “The safety and convenience of the public are important to us and therefore all directions and safety signs will be in place during the road closure. The road closure is to ensure the safety of the public as well as the construction workers. We thank the public for their cooperation and patience during the construction period,” said Robertson.
