The DA challenges the Minister of Home Affairs, Aaron Motsoaledi, to come out of his ivory tower and accompany us on our oversight inspections to Home Affairs offices in Benoni and Edenvale next week.
These inspections come after we have received several complaints from people who have been unable to access Home Affairs services due to long queues and delays at various locations across the country. According to a complaint from Benoni Home Affairs, for instance, the staff only services 5 people per hour. As a result, those seeking basic services are forced to wait for hours or are often not assisted at all and told to return the next day; this is intolerable.
The DA strongly encourages Minister Motsoaledi to join us so that he can see for himself Home Affairs’ inefficiencies and the extent to which those inefficiencies are resulting in long lines of people desperate for crucial services such as the registration of births, applications for Identity Documents and the rectification of documents.
The continuous challenges with queues at Home Affairs is another indication that Minister Motsoaledi’s department’s much-publicised “war on queues” has been a massive flop.
The DA therefore urges the Minister to accept our invitation to see and experience for himself the problems that regular South Africans face when they visit a Home Affairs office. Maybe this will inspire him to find effective solutions to the poor service delivery and snaking queues at Home Affairs offices across the country. South Africans deserve an efficient and professional Department of Home Affairs.
