There were round robin matches followed by the knockout phase during the tournament finals, where Simunye Netball Club of Khayelitsha finished third and earned bronze.

Weltevrede Netball Club and Tygerberg battled for the title, with the latter coming out tops, winning gold with 22 points.

In addition to their trophy and bragging rights, the Tygerberg team also won tickets to watch a netball match during the Netball World Cup in July.

The U19 local Netball Tournament series provides an avenue for talented youth to showcase their abilities and compete against other local teams.

It is an important part of the City and Cape Town Netball Federation’s mission of promoting netball and creating opportunities for youth to participate in the sport.

It also encourages participants to be team-oriented, develop leadership skills, gain confidence in their abilities, learn netball fundamentals and have fun.

‘I want to thank everyone for the hard work that went into this tournament, and also to the spectators who showed up in their numbers to support the teams this past weekend. The City’s Recreation and Parks Department has committed to making this a legacy programme that will run over three years to promote netball in communities and raise the profile of the game, with the aim to reach out to youth in our local communities and encourage them to take up the sport. Resources such as training sessions and equipment to help them get started will be provided,’ said Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Patricia Van der Ross.

The U19 Local Netball Tournament series is run in partnership with the Recreation and Parks Department and the Cape Town Netball Federation.

We are grateful for the support of our partners and look forward to seeing the growth of netball in years to come.
