Today’s signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Western Cape Government, the City of Cape Town, and South African Police Service is an important step in addressing the escalating crime crisis. This agreement is an acknowledgment by the national government and SAPS that a combined and collaborative effort is required to tackle crime effectively. We commend this initiative and view it as a positive development in the right direction.

The crimes statistics, released this morning for the first part of the year, reveal an alarming rise in crimes against women and children, with sharp increases in murders, attempted murders, and assaults being reported across the country. Equally concerning is the sharp rise in commercial crimes and kidnappings, highlighting the urgent need for more effective interventions and better intelligence coordination.

What is particularly concerning, is that in the Western Cape, despite some marginal reductions in specific categories, the overall situation is dire, particularly the alarming increases in violent crimes such as attempted murder, assault, and kidnappings.

But there is hope. Today’s agreement represents the broader goal of a more decentralised policing system that will allow local governments to address unique safety challenges with closer cooperation with the SAPS within their localities.

It is the first step towards empowering local governments with the necessary resources and authority to address unique safety concerns within local jurisdiction. In collaboration with the South African police Service, this agreement puts in place building blocks towards safer communities and a more secure South Africa achieved through shared responsibility and localised action,

The DA believes the agreement should serve as a pilot for other regions across South Africa grappling with high levels of crime. This collaborative approach, bringing together various spheres of government and law enforcement, sets the stage for similar initiatives in other provinces facing similar challenges. The Western Cape’s model can provide a blueprint for national strategies aimed at reducing crime and improving safety in communities throughout the country.

Our residents look to us for action and hope. We must not fail them. We urge all stakeholders to put aside political differences and work together to make every community in the Western Cape a place of safety and economic growth.
