The Democratic Alliance (DA) commends Western Cape MEC for Education, David Maynier, for his transparency in addressing the critical issue of budget shortfalls in education funding. His communication with school principals and proactive engagement with national leaders demonstrates accountability and a commitment to safeguarding the future of education in the Western Cape.

The threat to teaching jobs across the country has become a pressing concern. Severe budget shortfalls in provincial budgets, particularly in provinces like KwaZulu-Natal, poses a grave risk, with projections showing that up to 11 000 teaching positions are unaffordable. This crisis has been triggered by a centrally-negotiated and fiscally irresponsible public wage increase in the October 2023 budget, now forcing provinces to cut critical services to the detriment of teachers and learners.

The DA has long called for the protection of frontline teaching positions in the budget. We urgently call on Treasury to intervene and prevent these harmful cuts.

Additionally, we urge the state to freeze the salaries of public servants not covered by Occupation Specific Dispensation (OSD) – specifically managers and administrators – whose roles are not critical to the functioning of education. This will allow the government to protect the wages of essential teaching staff, ensuring that educators covered by OSD receive inflation-linked salary increases.

We welcome the leadership shown by Minister of Basic Education, Siviwe Gwarube, who has inherited this urgent challenge. Her engagement with provincial counterparts and Treasury is a positive step toward addressing the severe funding shortfall. The DA also supports MEC Maynier’s call for teacher unions to join with provincial governments in fighting for teachers. Cooperation, not confrontation, is the key to protecting the education of our children.

The DA will continue to advocate for responsible budgeting and hold the government accountable to ensure that no teacher is forced out of their job due to poor fiscal management. We cannot allow the future of our education system to be compromised.
