Kevin Mileham MP- DA Spokesperson on Electricity and Energy

Speech 1

“As the DA, we today call for an urgent review of how our electricity sector is structured, a clear picture of what the role of the National Transmission Company is in terms of procuring electricity, and where ESKOM fits into that picture. We must, as the Electricity Regulation Amendment Bill says: “provide for an open market platform that allows for competitive electricity trading” and which recognises that ESKOM is just one supplier among many, as we diversify our electricity generation capacity. We need to have a dialogue on how NERSA determines the tariffs, and what can be done to foster greater transparency in this regard. And we need to ensure that those tariffs are implementable, and can withstand rigorous scrutiny.”

Edwin Baptie MP- DA Deputy Spokesperson on Electricity and Energy

Speech 2

“The proposal for a 36% increase in 2025 is nothing short of an attack on the very livelihoods of millions of South Africans. Energy poverty is already a reality for millions, and this increase will force even more households to choose between buying electricity and meeting basic needs like food and housing. Rising electricity costs will have a ripple effect across the economy. Businesses, particularly small and medium enterprises, will face skyrocketing operational costs, forcing many to close their doors. Unemployment will rise from an already shocking 32,9%, and our local economies will suffer further stagnation, forcing more people into a life of poverty.”

Mlindi Nhanha MP- DA Spokesperson on Land Reform and Rural Development
