The gazetting of the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) marks a transformative step toward harnessing South Africa’s tourism potential, aligning with the DA’s commitment to expand economic opportunities and create jobs.

TTOS, designed to streamline visa processing for certified tour operators, is set to attract more visitors from key global markets known for high travel volumes. This boost is vital, as tourism remains one of South Africa’s most powerful job-creating sectors. According to World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) data, tourism employed 1.46 million people in 2023 and is forecasted to grow at 7.6% annually over the next decade, injecting nearly R300 billion into our economy.

Further statistics show that for every 100 international tourists visiting our shores, 2 jobs are created. With over 100 million Chinese tourists traveling abroad in 2023 alone – and markets like Australia welcoming 1.4 million Chinese visitors – South Africa has significant potential to grow its own numbers, which currently stand at only 93,000 Chinese visitors annually. TTOS aims to bridge this gap, making South Africa an attractive, accessible destination for Chinese and Indian tourists. Studies demonstrate that a 10% increase in tourism can contribute to a 0.6% rise in economic growth, generating thousands of jobs.

Equipped with a streamlined online portal, dedicated adjudicators, and strengthened security measures, TTOS will expedite visa approvals, boosting cross-sector collaboration and visitor confidence. The DA commends, Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber, on the TTOS as a digital-first innovation to solidify South Africa’s position as a top-tier global destination, fueling economic development and job creation in the tourism sector.

This significant reform, however, must be coupled with additional initiatives. Namely, dealing with our scourge of crime; rebuilding our dilapidated infrastructure; as well as ensuring investor confidence through clean governance and pro-market reforms.

As the Department of Tourism undertakes its first policy review in decades, we will champion further reforms to ensure that our country is an international destination envy.
