The Democratic Alliance (DA) is deeply appalled by the reckless actions of an Emondlo Bus Service driver who attempted to cross the heavily flooded Mvulane River near Vryheid in the Zululand District yesterday, despite severe weather conditions and heavy rains.

This irresponsible decision, reportedly made under the influence of alcohol, not only endangered the lives of passengers but also constituted gross negligence and reckless driving.

According to information at our disposal, passengers repeatedly warned the driver against crossing the flooded river. However, the driver allegedly disregarded these warnings and proceeded with the hazardous crossing. This action demonstrates a blatant disregard for safety and underscores the driver’s negligence and recklessness.

The DA calls on the South African Police Service (SAPS) to investigate this incident thoroughly and to take swift, decisive action against the perpetrator. Such disregard for human life must not go unpunished.

We also condemn any attempts to intimidate DA Councillor Magda Victor, who has courageously exposed and demanded accountability for this incident. Councillors are elected public representatives tasked with safeguarding the interests of the community. Threats or efforts to silence them are criminal and must be met with zero tolerance.

The DA remains committed to holding individuals and institutions accountable for their actions to ensure the safety and well-being of all South Africans.
