The DA will use every opportunity in this afternoon’s Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health to interrogate the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, on the unemployment crisis facing medical professionals in the country.

Not only has it come to light that thousands of doctors and pharmacists are struggling to find employment, including Dr Decent Mkhombo who recently concluded his community service year after being admitted to medical school at the age of 15, the halting of the United States’ PEPFAR aid could lead to 15 000 health care workers joining South Africa’s vast unemployment lines.

The DA calls on President Cyril Ramaphosa to reconsider Minister Motsoaledi’s position, in favour of a Minister who is both capable and compassionate, one that will not undermine the strategic health goals of the government of national unity (GNU). South Africa public health sector desperately needs immediate interventions – something the current Health Minister is not interested in.
