The DA has submitted our objections to the Health Minister, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi’s proposed regulations for National Health Insurance (NHI) Board appointments and encourage South Africans to make submissions before 6 June 2025 to regcomments@health.gov.za.
The DA objects to the draft regulations as we continue to believe that the NHI’s poor design will impede the provision of universal healthcare access, as well as further degrade the quality of care in the public health sector and damage the South African economy.
In particular, we object to the significant influence the Health Minister will have over the final appointments of the NHI Fund’s CEO and the Advisory Committees, as well as the influence the Minister seeks to wield in determining the Advisory Committees’ working procedures.
We do not believe that a door should be opened to allow for political influence as it surely leads to cadre deployment, maladministration, and corruption.
