The DA demands Minister Nkabane account for politicised appointments.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the National Assembly has written to the Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Higher Education and Training to urgently summon the Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Nobuhle Nkabane, to appear before the committee.
This follows the emergence of a leaked list of appointments to Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) boards, revealing a troubling pattern of political patronage. The list includes several ANC cadres, many of whom are from Minister Nkabane’s home province of KwaZulu-Natal, being appointed as Chairpersons of these critical public institutions.
Among the controversial appointments are:
– Buyambo Mantashe, son of ANC National Chairperson Gwede Mantashe, as Chairperson of the MERSETA Board,
– Nomusa Dube-Ncube, former KZN Premier, as Chairperson of the BANKSETA Board, and
– Siboniso Mbhele, current Head of Department in the KZN Department of Transport, to another SETA board position
– Loyiso Lugayeni Masuku, ANC Deputy Regional Secretary (Greater JHB Region), COJ MMC Corporate Services, Bandile Masuku’s Wife
(See the full list here.)
These appointments raise serious concerns about the politicisation of institutions meant to serve all South Africans. SETA boards play a vital role in skills development and economic empowerment. They are not ANC cadre deployment havens, nor should they be misused as rewards for political loyalty.
The DA will not allow these institutions to be captured and repurposed to benefit a narrow political elite at the expense of ordinary South Africans. We will demand full transparency and accountability from Minister Nkabane regarding these appointments.
