The Democratic Alliance (DA) is unapologetically driving a growth-first agenda within the Government of National Unity (GNU), focused on creating jobs, attracting investment, and delivering energy security. But progress is being held back by those unwilling to make the urgent decisions required to modernise our economy.
A key pillar of this growth agenda is the expansion and modernisation of South Africa’s electricity grid – the very foundation on which energy security, job creation, and inclusive economic growth must be built. Yet despite mounting warnings, critical investment in grid infrastructure continues to be delayed.
In a debate held in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) last week, the Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, confirmed that the estimated cost of upgrading South Africa’s grid infrastructure stands at a staggering R440 billion.
Importantly, the Minister also acknowledged, echoing the DA’s position, that South Africa does not have the tax base to fund this infrastructure alone. The only viable solution will be to attract both national and international investment through well-structured public-private partnerships (PPPs).
The DA has been clear: success in securing South Africa’s energy future will depend on private sector participation to complement, not replace, the state. We are calling for a pragmatic, investment-friendly energy policy that recognises the limitations of Eskom and the state.
Grid infrastructure is the canary in the coal mine. Without urgent investment and planning, South Africa may find itself back in the blackout-riddled daily life that has plagued us for much of the pre-GNU era.
The DA commends Deputy Minister Samantha Graham-Mare, who continues to lead efforts to cut red tape for Independent Power Producers (IPPs). But this must now be matched by action from Minister Ramokgopa to focus urgently on modernising and expanding grid infrastructure to ensure new energy supply can actually reach consumers.
The stabilisation of the grid would not only allay the fears of South Africans of a winter plagued by blackouts, but would be the bedrock on which the GNU can tackle its three apex priorities:
- Driving inclusive growth and job creation;
- Reducing poverty and tackling the high cost of living; and
- Building a capable, ethical and developmental state.
This is what the DA is fighting for, and we will continue to push real solutions to unlock South Africa’s energy potential and restore investor confidence in our future.
