Today, the Democratic Alliance (DA) opens applications for our flagship political leadership development programme.

South Africa urgently needs a new generation of ethical, capable, and values-driven leaders who can confront our country’s deepening economic, political, and social crises.

The DA’s Young Leaders Programme (YLP) is a part-time development initiative that equips young South Africans with the skills, knowledge, and networks to thrive in politics and public service.

If you are aged 18 to 35 and share the DA’s values of Freedom, Fairness, Opportunity, and Diversity, we encourage you to apply to be part of the Young Leaders Programme Class of 2026.

Since its launch in 2007, the YLP has graduated 330 young leaders, 84 of whom are currently serving in public office, including:

  •  National Ministers – 2
  • Deputy Ministers – 1
  • Provincial Ministers – 3
  • Mayors – 2
  • Deputy Mayor – 1
  • Speaker – 1
  • Deputy Speaker – 1
  • Members of Mayoral Committees – 3
  • Chief Whip in the National Assembly – 1
  • Deputy Chief Whip in the National Assembly – 1
  • Members of Parliament – 12
  • Members of Provincial Legislatures – 13
  • PR/Ward Councillors – 43

We’re looking for young South Africans who want to make a tangible difference—those with a commitment to public service, a passion for leadership, and a drive to improve the lives of others.

To apply, you will need:

  •  A completed online application form
  • A reference letter (not older than 6 months)
  • A 60-second video

Visit www.youngleaders.org.za to learn more about the programme, hear from our alumni, and access the application form.

Applications close at 17:00 on Thursday, 28 August 2025.
