This morning the Democratic Alliance laid criminal charges against ANC Minister Nobuhle Nkabane, for lying to Parliament and for fraud, while President Ramaphosa refuses to take any action against the corrupt and compromised ANC members of the National Executive.

This afternoon, in the National Council of Provinces in Parliament the DA debated against the Budget of her Department, because we cannot allow a Minister who lies to Parliament to oversee a budget of R142 Billion.

The DA cannot and will not support the budget vote of this Department, unless President Ramaphosa removes the lying ANC Minister from the National Executive.

The lack of action from Ramaphosa to remove compromised and corrupt ANC ministers and deputy ministers, reflects the ANC protection of corruption within its ranks.

The DA has committed to debate against the budgets of the departments in national government that are led by ANC ministers under clouds of corruption.

Extracts of the DA Debate speeches are as follows and strictly embargoed against delivery:

Jean Adriaanse, MP

  • Minister Nkabane must be fired for lying to Parliament and enabling ANC cadre deployment.
  • DHET is failing, achieving only 51.8% of its targets last year despite spending almost its entire budget.
  • NSFAS has lost over R128 million to fraud, with further waste on leases and parking instead of student support.
  • The Minister appointed ANC cadres to SETA boards and misled Parliament about the independence of the selection panel.
  • Urgent action is needed to stop corruption and ensure education funding creates jobs and opportunities for young people.

Nicola Du Plessis, MP

  • Millions of young South Africans are locked out of opportunity due to a corrupt and failing higher education system.
  • Minister Nkabane has misled Parliament and overseen chaos in NSFAS, collapsing infrastructure, and dysfunctional SETAs.
  • Students face real hardships, including mid-year defunding, unsafe accommodation, and years-long delays in receiving certificates.
  • The DA is delivering real solutions, from student helpdesks and safety drives to MOUs linking graduates to jobs.
  • This budget fails under Minister Nkabane—it enables corruption, lacks oversight, and does not deliver real opportunity.

Igor Scheurkogel, MP

  • Minister Nkabane must be fired for misleading Parliament and failing students.
  • NSFAS and SETAs are in crisis, with missing funds, unpaid allowances, and politically connected board appointments.
  • Campus conditions are collapsing, with unsafe buildings, empty residences, and students forced to live in toilets and libraries.
  • The DA has laid criminal charges against the Minister for lying to Parliament about the SETA selection panel.
  • Higher education must deliver real jobs, not just paper degrees—through clean governance and job-linked, skills-based curricula.
