The Democratic Alliance (DA) notes the resignation of the Deputy Director General (DDG) for Real Estate Management Services in the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure (DPWI). This follows the Minister’s decision to launch a wide-ranging investigation into state leases, during which allegations of mismanagement were raised that implicated the DDG. The DDG resigned ahead of possible suspension.
This development underscores the urgent need for a thorough investigation into all work overseen by the DDG, particularly the leases procured under her watch and the operations of the Real Estate Management Services branch. This branch is responsible for managing the State’s vast property portfolio worth billions of rands, an area that has long faced allegations of irregular lease payments and questionable maintenance contracts.
The DA welcomes the Minister’s proactive application for a deep investigation into the Department’s leases, starting with the most valuable, to ensure that taxpayers’ money is protected and that the State’s property assets are managed with transparency and integrity.
Rooting out corruption is at the heart of why the DA entered the Government of National Unity, to restore public trust in government, safeguard public resources, and create the conditions for economic growth and job creation. In the case of the DPWI, this means unlocking the full potential of South Africa’s construction and asset management sectors.
Every successful effort to expose and probe corruption is a victory for the people of South Africa. The DA will continue to demand accountability, support robust investigations, and ensure that those found guilty of wrongdoing are held to account, no matter how senior their position.
