The below Member Statement was delivered by DA Member of Parliament Beyers Smit in the National Assembly.
On behalf of the Democratic Alliance (DA), I would like to commend the Minister of Agriculture for the successful delivery of the first batch of foot-and-mouth disease vaccines from Argentina at O. R. Tambo International Airport on Saturday, 21 February 2026.
These one million Biogénesis Bagó vaccines, received by the Minister, represent a decisive and determined step in safeguarding our national herd and restoring confidence in our agricultural sector.
This milestone marks the beginning of a comprehensive strategy to secure South Africa as an FMD-free zone, an achievement that will expand trade, stabilise rural economies, and bring renewed hope to affected farming communities.
We further welcome the news that additional millions of doses will follow in the coming weeks and months, reflecting strong leadership and effective international cooperation.
Honourable Speaker, we acknowledge the important roles that Onderstepoort Biological Products and the Provincial Governments play in the implementation phase, and we express our appreciation for the coordination that is already underway.
Today, we reiterate our gratitude for the urgency, commitment, and strategic foresight that the Minister demonstrated in addressing this national crisis. This progress brings real relief to farmers and contributes meaningfully to strengthening our country’s agricultural resilience.
I thank you!
