For nearly three years the DA has championed the reform of the laws governing illegal occupations and to put an end to incited land invasion. The DA’s Private Members Bill is currently in the Parliamentary process in this regard.

Today, Minister of Human Settlements, Thembi Simelane, will unveil the Department’s solution to the same issue. The DA has, over the last few months, engaged the Minister in very positive attempts to find common ground.

The DA expects that much of our agenda will land in the Minister’s announcement later today, and if so we will consider supporting the Departmental Bill.

The desperate need to end illegal land occupations and incited evictions, often under the auspices of politically connected persons, or outright criminals who “sell” land they don’t own, must end urgently.

The DA will not relent in this imperative for South Africa. We will be at the forefront of ending the protection of those who illegally occupy land.
