The Democratic Alliance (DA) extends our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of those who tragically lost their lives in two related collisions on the N1 this weekend.
According to the South African Police Service, the first incident occurred when a man was fatally struck by a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer.
In a second, devastating incident, the man’s wife and baby were struck and killed by a vehicle in the official convoy of Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, as she attempted to cross the road to reach the scene of the initial accident.
It is reported that the Minister contacted the police to report the collision and remained at the scene, together with his protection detail, until SAPS and emergency medical services arrived.
Media reports further indicate that the couple’s 14-year-old daughter may have witnessed both incidents.
The DA calls on the Departments of Health and Social Development to urgently ensure that the child receives immediate psychosocial support and trauma counselling during this profoundly difficult time.
The DA further calls for a full, independent and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding both incidents, including the conduct of all drivers involved, the speed of the Minister’s vehicle, and whether blue lights were being used.
