The dismissal of Major General Feroz Khan from the South African Police Service must be the first of many, until all of the crooked cops are removed from office.

This is a first step, and must lead to more.

It cannot continue that over 20 senior officers and senior officials remain on suspension, without their matters being drawn to the obvious conclusion.

This includes:

— The National Minister, Senzo Mchunu, suspended on full pay for over a year,

— Multiple officers suspended in June over the Cat Matlala tender,

— The National Commissioner Gen Fannie Masemola,

— Lt-Gen Shadrack Sibiya, Deputy National Commissioner, and

— Lt-Gen Molefe Fani, Divisional Commissioner: Supply Chain Management.

Increasing evidence of corruption, organised crime, capture of the police, collaboration with gangsters, and the perversion of the service demands action – not delays.

The DA calls on SAPS to ensure that other senior officers who have broken the law are held accountable for their actions. We fully expect that more dismissals will follow.
