The executive mayor of DA-led Oudtshoorn municipality, Colan Sylvester, handed over 50 title deeds today (13 August) as part of the third phase of the Rosevalley Housing Project. Another 307 title deeds will be handed over to beneficiaries throughout the rest of August.

Amongst those who now have official title to their homes are 74-year-old Freek Ekstraal, who lives with a disability, and 77-year-old Adam Kriga.

The project to upgrade the informal settlement of Riemvasmaak (now called Rosevalley) was undertaken in four phases through the Upgrading of Informal Settlements Programme. It forms part of the DA-led council’s undertaking to prioritise human settlements as one of its key focus areas.

The first phase saw the building of 299 houses which were handed over to the beneficiaries in December 2015 and phase two entailed the building of 335 houses which were completed and handed over in December 2018. Phase three created another 318 opportunities.

The first three phases of this project were valued at R161 354 million. The fourth and final phase will of the project will create another 132 opportunities at a cost of R22 176 million and will commence in 2019 or early 2020.
