In June 2019, the DA-led Bergrivier municipality hosted a youth outreach programme in Piketberg to address the challenges and difficulties faced by the youth.

More than 50 young people came together and had a brainstorming session where the following important points were discussed:

  • Giving the youth an opportunity to share their issues and concerns directly with the municipality,
  • Identifying mechanisms by which the identified problems can be addressed, and
  • Organising and formalising the efforts of youth in the municipal sphere by combining already established youth structures and forums into one structure.

Mayco member Mario Wessels addressed those in attendance and encouraged them to get involved in the municipal public participation processes to make sure their voices are heard.

Mayor Ray Van Rooy later commented on the importance of the youth and the impact they have on our future; “The future leaders of Bergrivier will be found amongst our youth. Thus, it is important for us to not only create a platform for their voices to be heard and to meaningfully contribute in the activities of the municipality, but also by creating programmes and hosting events aimed at empowering, developing and inspiring them to make a success of their lives.”
