Kouga builds temporary shelters to dedensify Stofwolk informal settlement

The Kouga Municipality has employed ten local SMMEs to build temporary shelters
for beneficiaries who are set to benefit from the Hankey RDP housing development.
The project will provide accommodation for families from Stofwolk informal
settlement in an effort to de-densify the settlement and promote social distancing.

The temporary shelters have access to services, including access roads which have
already been built. Communal taps and containerised ablution facilities are also set
to be installed. Once shelters have been completed Eskom will install electricity
access.

The project has also supported small local businesses at a time when the economy
has taken a serious knock from lockdown. All ten of the local SMMEs involved are
from the Hankey area. Each SMME is employing 4 to 5 local workers meaning the
initiative also has a positive jobs impact. A total of 343 of these shelters will be built.
The first 200 are set for completion by the end of July.
