The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith, joined the Kuilsriver Neighbourhood Watch last night as they patrolled the suburb’s streets.

The City’s Safety and Security Directorate and the Provincial Department of Community Safety collaborate to support accredited neighbourhood watches by means of training and the provision of patrol and crime prevention equipment.

‘Watches do not only help to make communities safer, and reduce the risk of crime, but they contribute towards unity and fostering a sense of pride in the area. In many areas neighbours do not know each other. A neighbourhood watch encourages a healthier and more inclusive community in which residents are more inclined to collaborate towards creating a safer environment.

‘It is heart-warming to see so many residents take an interest in the safety of their area as they came out in large numbers to patrol their streets and reinforce their visibility. I encourage residents to look out for each other and be aware of what is happening in their areas. Only by working together can we reduce the incidents of crime plaguing our suburbs,’ said Alderman Smith.
