Executive Mayor Leon Van Wyk recently paid a visit to the municipal building which is being upgraded and converted into a brand-new Motor Vehicle and Registration (MVR) satellite office with a drive-through service for license disk renewals – a first in the Western Cape Province. The building is located next to the Blanco Community Hall.
The municipal Human Settlements Directorate assisted with inhouse labour by laying paving for the Drive-through driveway. According to Vernon Petersen, Acting Traffic Chief, the new Motor Vehicle and Registration office will assist the public with bulk MVR services with at least four counters available. Petersen said they are awaiting the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to install the computer system before the building can be officially opened for service to the public.
Ald Van Wyk said the provision of a second MVR office will increase the capacity for processing licenses and in turn reduce waiting periods. The innovative idea for a drive-through service will add to the reduction of waiting periods. “The Municipality has saved R1.2 million by using an existing structure for the new service,” Mayor Van Wyk said.
Cllr Charlotte Clarke, Portfolio Councillor for Protection Services, said the second facility will take the pressure off our already swamped officials and will aid to improve service delivery. “George wants to move with the times with the new drive-through service and we have heeded calls from the public to increase our capacity,” Clarke said.
The MVR offices in Hibernia Street next to the train station will continue with the other services as well. By moving the bulk services from the main office, the municipality will ensure a quick turnaround time for the normal customer.
