Phase 1 of the Leeu Gamka Water and Sanitation Upgrade Project is progressing well. The initial steps for improving the water treatment plant are underway, marking an important stage in our efforts to improve water quality and sanitation for the residents of Leeu-Gamka.
The project, funded through the National Department of Water and Sanitation’s Water Services Infrastructure Grant, aims to upgrade the water and sanitation networks. A key goal is to finally eradicate the bucket toilet system for all the Transnet settlements in Leeu-Gamka. This includes the installation of an R8 million purification package plant, which we expect to install and complete by the end of September 2024.
Key Developments for Phase 1 of the project include:
1. Site Clearance: The area designated for the new water treatment plant has been cleared in preparation for construction.
2. Fence Relocation: To accommodate the new infrastructure, we have relocated fencing around the site.
3. Foundation Work: We have begun laying concrete footings for both the main water treatment plant and the aeration column.
4. Infrastructure Preparation: Chambers for valves and pipe configurations are being constructed to ensure proper water flow and control.
Residents of Leeu Gamka are being employed for short term positions during Phase 1 as the bulk of the scope of this phase involves complex mechanical installations. While these opportunities are currently limited, they provide some immediate benefit to the community. We anticipate that the next two project phases will offer more employment opportunities.
We will continue to keep the community informed as we advance through each of the three stages of this multi-million Rand infrastructure project to upgrade the water and sanitation networks in Leeu Gamka.
We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work to improve our local infrastructure and quality of life.
