SWARTLAND EXPANDS COMMUNITY SAFETY THROUGH SMOKE ALARM PROJECT

29 Oct 2024 in Where We Govern

In a significant step towards safeguarding vulnerable communities, Swartland Municipality has recently taken delivery of 1705 smoke alarms. This initiative aims to bolster safety in high-density areas and informal settlements, where the impact of fires can be particularly devastating.

The acquisition of these smoke alarms was made possible by a generous R500,000 grant from the Western Cape Government. This funding is addition of a R926 000 grant allocated for a new fire pumper, set to arrive in March 2025. Swartland Municipality extends its gratitude to the Provincial Government for its ongoing support in enhancing our firefighting capabilities and community safety.

“Smoke alarms are a critical first line of defence against devastating fires,” said Executive Mayor, Harold Cleophas.  “They serve as an early warning system that can save lives and protect property, especially in densely populated areas where the risk of fire spreading is high.”

These smoke alarms feature a battery life of 10 years and activate upon detecting smoke, providing timely alerts to residents and neighbouring households. This quick response can facilitate swift evacuations and prompt notifications to the fire department, significantly reducing the risk of loss of life and property.

Recognizing the importance of this initiative, Swartland Municipality has allocated an additional R250 000 to purchase more smoke alarms. We remain hopeful that the Provincial Government will continue to support our safety efforts with future grants, allowing us to further protect our communities.

Together, we can build safer environments for all residents.
