Swartland Municipality is thrilled to announce the grand opening of a brand-new municipal swimming pool. This project represents the Municipality’s commitment to providing accessible, high-quality spaces for recreation, fitness, and community engagement.
At the opening ceremony, Executive Mayor Harold Cleophas said:’’ This was a bucket list item for me since I took office in 2021. Thank you to the Council for approving the funds to make this facility possible. It is truly world-class!”
The new facility is located at the Wesbank Sport Grounds and forms part of the greater complex. The facility consists of a new 25m x 50m swimming pool with a depth range of 1,35m at the shallow end, and 1,5m at the deep end. There is also a kiddie’s pool and a baby pool on the premisses. The main building consists of a male and a female facility for persons with disability, separate ablution facilities for men and women, separate cloakrooms for men and women, a lifeguard office, a caretaker office, a storeroom and a pump room.
This facility is also unique because it uses a salt chlorination system instead of a conventional chlorination system. This salt to chlorination system converts salt to HTH by means of electrolysis and is more environmentally friendly and cost effective.
The total cost of the project is R20,26 million (Vat excl). Construction began on 26 February 2024 and the site was handed over to the municipality on 6 December 2024.
We are excited to offer this resource to the community, enhancing the quality of life for everyone, and we look forward to seeing how the pool will be enjoyed by families, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts alike. We do however want to urge the community to take ownership of this facility and to take care of it. Do not allow vandalism or mean-spirited ignorance to damage or destroy this world class facility. Do not stay silent when you see acts of vandalism by any member of the community. This is a significant investment in providing facilities for the community, and it is up to our residents to make sure it can be enjoyed for many years to come. “This was built for the entire Swartland community. This creates the opportunity to train the next generation of Chad Le Clos’s and Penny Heyns’s.” said Mayor Cleophas.
The pool will officially open to the public on Friday, 13 December 2024. It is a welcome addition to our summer facilities.
