The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Development Planning is calling on residents to participate in engagement sessions for the Fast-Tracking Development of the Corridors of Freedom.
The ongoing efforts in realising the City of Johannesburg’s Corridors of Freedom vision are now closer to reaching another milestone within the implementation phase. The City is in the process of establishing Special Development Zones to fast-track development applications within the Louis Botha and Empire Perth Development Corridors.
Revitalising established, old areas of the City is one of the main objectives of the Corridors of Freedom, and the fast-tracking mechanism will serve as a catalyst for much needed urban development and renewal. The introduction of new high-density housing, more special amenities and business opportunities – all linked to public transport – are expected to inject new life into well-located areas of the City.
The following three neighbourhoods, each located along current and future BRT routes, and in close proximity to Johannesburg CBD, have been identified for piloting the mechanism:
1) Orange Grove Precinct
2) Brixton Precinct
3) Knowledge Precinct (Part of Westdene and Auckland Park)
As key stakeholders, residents are invited to come and join us as we unpack this groundbreaking zoning mechanism, which promotes sustainable regeneration and renewal through economically feasible development models.
Members of the public are welcome to view proposals and submit their comments to officials during exhibition times.
The first session begins with a presentation today, and will focus on the Orange Grove Precinct.
