Mayor Mashaba to launch Easter Road Safety Awareness Campaign

04 Apr 2017 in Where We Govern

Today, Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg, Cllr Herman Mashaba, and MMC for Public Safety, Cllr Michael Sun, will launch the City’s Easter Road Safety Awareness Campaign in conjunction with the Department of Public Safety.

During the Easter Weekend, many residents take leave and travel to various destinations to spend time with their family and friends. As a result, there is a vast increase in the number of motorists on our roads during this time. Unfortunately, the Easter Weekend is also known as a time during which many residents disregard the rules of the road, drive under the influence or in worst case scenarios, end up being involved in fatal vehicle crashes.

Within the directorate of the Department of Public Safety, the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is mandated to police traffic within the City, enforce municipal by-laws and clamp down on crime.

As such the City’s Public Safety Awareness Programme aims to educate residents about road safety during the festive period in an effort to reduce the number of road crashes, fatalities and instances of driving under the influence.

Members of the media are welcome to attend.
