To mark Freedom Day Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Cllr Athol Trollip, has unveiled an iconic Democratic Mayors’ Gallery.
The gallery is specific to those Mayors who were in office from 2001 when the amalgamated Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality was established.
This important display of portraits, exhibited in City Hall, recognises the growing legacy of our constitutional democracy, as outlined below.

Entrusted with protecting South Africa’s constitutional democracy, these Mayors were tasked with redressing the legacy of apartheid through delivering services to all the people of the Municipality.
We are honoured to have unveiled this symbolic gallery, the first of its kind, during the term of this new government.
Freedom Day is one of the most historical days in South Africa’s annual calendar as the country commemorates the day when the first democratic elections were held in 1994.
It is in this respect that the City has chosen Freedom Day on which to unveil this historic gallery.
This will serve as a reminder to all future Mayors that this position will require steadfast commitment and integrity, in service of our people.
