The smoke alarm project, a joint venture between the Breede Valley Municipality, the Western Cape government and the University of Stellenbosch and the Breede Valley Fire department has entered into Phase 2 of the project.
To date 676 alarms have been installed in Avian Park and 300 in the New Mandela informal settlement in Zwelethemba. A further 450 alarms will be installed in this area and should be completed by the end of June 2017.
The smoke alarms, provided by the provincial government, are installed with the participation of the Fire Department, the ward councillor and the ward committee member. The installation is used as an opportunity to brief the community on the prevention of fires.
The municipality has a finite number of alarms that can be installed and has called on any interested parties who would like to join this venture to contact the Fire Department.
