The Drakenstein municipality recently approved a detailed four phase development plan for the area known as Die Kraal. The total cost of the project is estimated at R59 Million and will be implemented over a period of 4 financial years starting with 2017/18. Die Kraal is a historic community facility that was donated to the local community by the Slabbert family in 1923. The land, which is located across from the Paarl Train Station, was used by the local rugby club for many years. It has however been unused for many years and attempts by the Drakenstein Municipality to use it for economic development projects were blocked by community action.
The Municipality has now decided to redevelop the land into a sports centre. The extensive development plan for the land envisages the development of two rugby fields, one cricket field, netball courts, pavilions and a club house with a museum.
