MMC Mpho Phalatse celebrates Youth Day at Mini Olympics in Eldorado Park

15 Jun 2017 in Where We Govern

Tomorrow, the MMC for Health and Social Development, Dr Mpho Phalatse, will support the Touch a Life Foundation in Eldorado Park, who will be hosting their first Mini Olympic Games at the Eldorado Park athletic stadium.

This event will be held as part of the annual Youth Day celebrations, and aims to bring families together in the spirit of fun and social cohesion.

The socio-economic adversities which the community of Eldorado Park are faced with on a daily basis have led to the destruction of youth through drug and alcohol abuse.

Sport offers children mental and physical stimulation, and in line with the City’s Healthy Lifestyle and Healthy Schools programme, it keeps them off the streets.

We believe that people, and specifically young people need and deserve meaningful opportunities to ensure they stay away from drugs and alcohol. When they have these opportunities through sport and arts and culture, they are able to build solid foundations for themselves.

Below are the sporting codes for the day:

  • 10 km cycling race
  • 4x4km relay run
  • 5 km fun run
  • 1km street sprint
  • Fast 5 netball
  • Handball
  • Hockey
  • Touch Rugby
  • Volleyball
  • Chess
  • Gymnastic expo
  • Knitting competition
  • Aerobic Zumba Marathon
  • Equestrian challenge for club members
