MIDVAAL LOCAL MUNICIPALITY CONDEMNS VIOLENT PROTEST ACTION BY SICELO COMMUNITY RESIDENTS

26 Jul 2017 in Where We Govern

The municipality will like to condemn the on-going violent Sicelo community protest action which have resulted in the damaging of property, intimidation and closing of the R59 and Johan Le Roux Road.

The protest leaders demand that the residents of Sicelo be given subdivided residential stands first before the municipality can electrify 3500 shacks, paving of the roads and increasing the number of water stand pipes/taps as contained in the current budget. The municipality acceded to their request as MEC Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements: Hon Paul Mashatile promised to allocate them subdivided residential stands on Erven 72 and 78 Meyerton Farms.

The cost of repairing damages as a result of these protest action is significant and will compromise the municipality’s committed investment plans to its residents.

The municipality will like to request that:
Community representatives work with the municipality in finding sustainable solution to the protest action,
MEC Cooperative Governance, Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements: Hon Paul Mashatile, respond to the letter sent to his office (written by the municipality’s and Sicelo Community representatives) on 11 July 2017 and
Sicelo community representatives work with the municipality to restore calm in the community.

The municipality will like to reassure the Sicelo community that it is committed in improving their quality of life hence it has committed budget of R21 million this financial year, 2017/2018 to implement interventions agreed to at the IDP meetings. We will like to work with our communities in realising the municipality vision: to inclusively serve the needs of our communities.
