The Stellenbosch Municipality Law Enforcement section took part in a safety and security operation during the evening of 4 August and the early hours of 5 August 2017. The operation, code named Operation Broom, formed part of the Stellenbosch Safety Initiative and involved multiple stakeholders including the Municipality, SAPS and stakeholders from the private sector.
The operation consisted of foot patrols and road blocks and targeted vehicles as well as establishments selling alcohol. The operation was very successful and resulted in several arrests, confiscation of illegal substances, weapons and the closing of liquor premises’ operating without a licence.
Various arrests were made in connection with the possession of drugs, drunken driving, in possession of dangerous weapons and possession of unlicensed firearms and/or ammunitions.
Mayor van Deventer said: “The success of this operation is due to the cooperation of the various stakeholders. We cannot secure our community if we do not work together on joint operations such as this. I want to thank the Stellenbosch Safety Initiative (SSI) and all its partners who participated in Operation Broom. Similar future operations will help us improve the safety and security of our residents and send a strong message to criminals that you are not welcome here.
