Continuous cooperation between various stakeholders in the safety and security sector is yielding positive results and creating a safer environment for all residents and visitors to the greater Stellenbosch. Since the beginning of August various operations have taken place with the assistance of the Stellenbosch Safety Initiative (SSI) and its partners, including the Municipality and the South African Police Service.
During the past two weeks, 8 vehicle check points were conducted and 111 areas patrolled. This has resulted in 17 arrests, the confiscation of 272 drug and drug related items and 85 bottles of liquor. Two firearms were also confiscated along with various rounds of ammunition. During the past weekend, various warrants were executed and properties searched. This resulted in the discovery of drugs and the arrest of several suspects.
Traffic Law Enforcement has also conducted various operations during the past month, resulting in 11 fines for disobeying stop signs, 2707 fines for exceeding the legal speed limit, 323 fines for parking offences and 60 fines for taxi related offences. Six people were also arrested for reckless and negligent driving. A total of R83 500 has been issued in fines for traffic related offences.
