Walking Bus

An initiative from Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer and the Provincial Community Safety Minister Dan Plato has taken to the streets of Cloeteville. This project, aimed at improving community safety and is known as the “Walking Bus”.

The project encourages communities to take ownership of community safety and to take their streets back from criminal elements. Volunteers join school children walking to school and escort them safely to and from school.

The adult volunteers wear bright yellow, well-marked fluorescent vests to identify them as part of the project. Plans are also in place to ensure an open and effective communications system that will allow volunteers to be able to keep in contact with each other as well as a representative of the Provincial government.

The project, already launched in several communities in the Western Cape has already lead to improved school attendance and safety in the areas where it has been implemented.

Executive Mayor Gesie van Deventer says that it is everyone’s responsibility to be the eyes and ears of the community and to ensure the safety and well-being of our children. The contribution of the parents in this project will help create a safer environment for children in our schools.
