On 21 May 2018, Executive Mayor – Patricia de Lille visited the Strand where she held a community meeting with residents of Nomzamo and Lwandle.
The City of Cape Town has been making progress in both communities to enhance service delivery.
In Nomzamo and Lwandle, the City is electrifying nine informal settlements – a process which we started two months ago.
City officials, working with a contractor, are currently in the process of finalising the electrification of 2 148 structures in Siyanyanzele, a section of Pholile and Simanyene.
We are working to complete this work by the end of July 2018.
Altogether, the City will be electrifying nine informal settlements in Nomzamo. Work on the six other areas will start in the 2018/19 financial year which commences in July.
This will take the total number of connections to 4 255 when the project is concluded. The full project is due for completion at the end of the year.
Together with this project, we also want to give back to the communities and provide lasting skills which they can use to further improve their lives.
In this regard, the City has signed a memorandum of understanding with the community last week. The agreement will offer 52 residents training in the Installation of Electricity project in Nomzamo under the EPWP programme.
This training will consist of pole climbing, installation of cables, airdac, ready boards and the installation of pole boxes.
In Lwandle we are upgrading the hostels which were built in the 1960s to accommodate about 500 male migrant workers.
The project, which was completed in February, has seen the old roofs being replaced with new zinc roof sheeting at a cost just over R1 million.
This project also created a number of job opportunities for the local community.
The City has plans to further do renovations such as staircase upgrades which will commence at the start of the 2018/19 financial year.
These projects in ward 85 and 86 underscore the City’s commitment to enhancing service delivery as intended by the Organisational Development and Transformation Plan.
The significant progress made so far is as a result of great collaboration between the various players including the community leaders and I would like to thank those involved in making it happen.
As a caring administration, we are committed to working with residents to ensuring that these projects are a success and improve the lives of the intended beneficiaries.
