Executive Mayor Marius Koen officially turned the sod on the land where the long-awaited Saldanha Bay Municipality Fire and Rescue Services precinct will be based.

The construction of the R5 million precinct is expected to commence in March 2019 and will take about nine months to complete.

The central location of the fire station, next to the Saldanha Airfield, will allow fire and rescue services personnel to be more accessible to the surrounding towns and at the same time, cut its emergency response times.

Mayor Koen said, “I am very excited about this project because public safety is a high priority and we should show daily appreciation to our firefighters who are risking their lives.”

The Mayor emphasised that this fire station is part of the municipality’s commitment to putting public safety first.

The new two-story building will comprise of a reception area, control room, disaster management office, boardroom, offices for the fire chief and deputy fire chief, four bays to accommodate eight fire and rescue vehicles, a compressor room, store room, kitchen, bathrooms and male and female quarters.
